What is Gemology?

The name gemology itself is as peculiar as its meaning. It’s with the study of gemology one learns to identify the difference between different gemstones. It is a branch of mineralogy and is said to be Geoscience. Gemology helps you dig the dissimilarity between the natural and artificial gemstone

Robert Shipley is also the person who established the Gemological Institute of America and the American Gem Society.

Diamond grader-

The job of a diamond grader revolves around grading the metals and precious stones to make jewelry out of it. They are the ones who take the responsibility to keep the jewelry clean and polished. They also shape the jewelry so that the stone can easily fit in it.

Gem polishers-

It’s clear from the name that the job of a gem polisher is to polish the gems and metal. They polish the metal for their final look. They create facets on stones by working with high rotating machines that help in providing the final touch to the stones.

Jewelry designers-

Every new design you get to see at a jewelry store is an art of a jewelry designer. These designers are specially trained to design unique styles of jewelry. They work on designing the shape, size, and style of jewelry. Their work demands a lot of changes and they have to design the jewelry as per customer satisfaction. 

Gem Assorter-

The different sizes, shapes, styles, and carat are assorted by a gem Assorter. Gem setter- The role of this gemologist requires a lot of patience and experience as they have to set the tone in the right place. They have to work with diminutive diamonds any mistake may harm the jewelry.

Instruments used by Gemologists

The work gemologists do is no magic, it’s a science and requires scientific instruments. Gemologists use certain instruments to ease their work. Earlier people often misinterpreted that gemologists do a type of eye and hand magic which triggers the gem to reveal its real state. It’s funny, no? Here is the list of some of the most vital instruments gemologists use.

Loupe-

A loupe aids gemologists to get a more magnified version of the gemstone. You probably can not see minor defaults in gems with your naked eye. A loupe hence plays an important role.

Microscope-

Not much similar to the loupe, a microscope defines the inclusions. The natural gems can be easily separated from their synthetic parts by the use of a microscope. It gives a clearer vision in contrast to the loupe. The microscope used is not your regular dental tool, its properties are much different from that.

Refractometer-

As the name says, a refractometer meter helps you to measure the refractive index of gemstones. It provides the birefringence and optic sign of gemstones.

Dichroscope-

This tool is the most inexpensive, as compared to others. It is a handy instrument which segregates colors in Dichroic materials.

Polariscope-

The optic sign of the gemstones is measured through this instrument. It distinguishes between natural and synthetic elements. Balance beam scale and heavy liquids - These tools are specially made to measure the specific gravity of the gem. However, they both are dissimilar to each other in the way they function. In a balance beam scale, one pan is put into the water, on the other hand, heavy liquids is a product of different liquids which have a specific gravity (SC). They both help in getting the specific gravity of gems.

Jewelers eye-

This instrument measures the luster of the gem. It is mostly used by Gemologists who travel so that they can easily carry it. It’s a portable tool.

Diamond detector-

This device is used to detect small, dirty and low-quality diamonds.

Chelsea filter-

The chromium color if given to diamond can be identified by the use of this device. It’s also termed as emerald filter as it separates real emerald stones from their copy.
